Moissanite Jewelry Care: A Complete Guide
Moissanite is a genuinely low-maintenance stone, but "low-maintenance" isn't the same as "no maintenance." A few good habits will keep your ring, pendant, earrings or bracelet looking as sharp as the day it arrived.
Everyday Habits
Take jewellery off before swimming, showering, cleaning the house, or working out. Chlorine and harsh household chemicals can dull metal finishes over time, especially on plated pieces, and moisture trapped against the skin can accelerate tarnishing on sterling silver. Put your jewellery on last, after perfume, lotion and hairspray, since those products can leave a residue on the metal and stone.
Cleaning at Home
Warm water, a few drops of mild dish soap, and a soft-bristled brush (an old, clean toothbrush works well) is all you need. Gently brush around the stone and setting, rinse thoroughly, and pat dry with a soft, lint-free cloth. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners on gold vermeil or plated pieces — the vibration and heat can wear down plating faster than normal use would. Moissanite itself is extremely durable and won't be damaged by this routine; it's the metal and setting that need the gentler touch.
Storage
Store each piece separately — in a soft pouch, a lined box, or a jewellery box with individual compartments — so pieces don't scratch each other in a drawer or bag. Keep jewellery away from direct sunlight and humidity when not in use, both of which can accelerate tarnishing on silver pieces over time.
What to Avoid
Skip abrasive cleaners, bleach, and anything containing chlorine. Don't wear rings while doing heavy manual work, gardening, or weightlifting — moissanite is hard, but a hard knock can still loosen a setting or chip the girdle of a stone over time. And resist the urge to polish plated jewellery with a jewellery cloth meant for solid gold or silver, which can wear through plating faster than you'd expect.
When to Get a Professional Check
Once a year or so, especially for a ring worn daily, it's worth having a local jeweller check that prongs are secure and the setting hasn't loosened. This is standard advice for any fine jewellery, not specific to moissanite, but it's the single best way to make sure a stone never comes loose from everyday wear.
