Moissanite vs Diamond: An Honest Comparison

If you've started shopping for a ring, you've probably run into the question: moissanite or diamond? Both are dazzling, both make beautiful engagement rings, and both are worth understanding properly before you decide — so here's the honest comparison, without the sales pitch.

They're Different Minerals, Not Rivals

Diamond is pure crystallised carbon. Moissanite is silicon carbide, a naturally occurring mineral first identified in meteorite fragments and now grown in a lab for jewellery use. It isn't a "fake diamond" or a diamond simulant trying to pass as something it's not — it's its own gemstone, with its own optical signature, and we think it deserves to be chosen on its own merits.

Hardness and Everyday Wear

On the Mohs hardness scale, diamond sits at 10 — the hardest natural material known. Moissanite comes in close behind at 9.25, which is still hard enough to resist scratching from almost everything you'll encounter in daily life, including other jewellery, sand, and general wear and tear. In practice, both stones hold up well to being worn every day, including in a ring.

Brilliance and Fire

This is where the two stones actually look different, and it comes down to physics. Moissanite has a higher refractive index than diamond, meaning it bends light more and throws off more colourful flashes of "fire" — the rainbow-like sparkle you see when a stone catches the light. Diamond's sparkle tends to read whiter and more subdued by comparison. Some people prefer moissanite's extra fire; others prefer diamond's cooler brilliance. Neither is more "correct" — it's a matter of taste.

Certification Matters, Whichever You Choose

Whatever stone you choose, buy it with paperwork. Every moissanite stone we sell at Manihar Gems ships with a GRA certification report grading its cut, carat weight, colour and clarity, so you know exactly what you're getting — see our Certification page for the full detail. If you're comparing against a diamond elsewhere, ask for equivalent documentation there too.

Which Should You Choose?

If sparkle-per-rupee and a stone you can wear worry-free every day matter most to you, moissanite is an excellent choice — you get real fire, real hardness, and a genuine gemstone with honest paperwork behind it. If tradition or a specific diamond's provenance matters more to you personally, that's a valid reason to choose diamond instead. There's no wrong answer, only the one that's right for you.
